A dark congregation of familiar faces
gathered around the quiet earth so I've been in this art rut lately, and I was just trying to find something to get out of it. I remember when John Mahoney came to talk with us, he said to try imitating other artist's style. So here I blatently coppied the style of John Baizley (who, in return, sort of blatently coppies the style of Alphonse Mucha). Now I'm worried that doing this was a bad idea because A) now all I can think of is this style, because I think it's just so lovely, and B) I think piece ended up being a lot better than most of what I've done in the past, and I don't feel like I deserve credit for that. It's an original image, with my own composition and critters and figure and such, but it's still unmistakably supposed to look like one of Baizley's album covers. this was before I was given the advice to try different subjects and medium--which I think I'll just stick with from now on. haha anyway, this is a self portrait of sorts. (as in, I used a photo of myself for reference. Not as in it looks anything like me. haha). I've been so frustrated and sad lately about a lot of different things, and I really put all of that into this. All the little critters and things mean something to me--and it's really the first time I've ever done that. And after drawing this, I actually felt a lot better. and the pointalism was quite the experience. it gets a little old after a while of trying to make something dark. haha |
